The Investment

After Hurricane Helene, many small businesses in Western North Carolina faced an immediate cash crisis. Physical damage, lost revenue, insurance delays, and lagging public relief threatened businesses already operating on narrow margins. Mountain BizWorks, a community development financial institution serving Western North Carolina, moved quickly to deploy recovery capital to affected small businesses. The organization had the local relationships, underwriting capacity, and recovery infrastructure needed to reach business owners, but additional bridge liquidity could help capital move faster.

Between December 2024 and April 2025, Abundance Angels and partners recommended two zero-interest loans totaling $125,000 to Mountain BizWorks. The capital did not go directly from Abundance to individual businesses. Instead, it helped capitalize a trusted regional intermediary already positioned to make emergency small-business recovery loans. The structure was intentionally simple: no interest, short duration, and repayment back to participating donor funds.

The loans helped Mountain BizWorks accelerate relief capital during a period when timing mattered as much as amount. Both loans were repaid in full. The capital returned to donor-advised funds, ready to be granted, invested, or deployed again. The investment demonstrates how charitable capital can serve as a short-term shock absorber in a crisis, helping bridge the gap between immediate community need and slower-moving recovery resources.
