The Investment
Optimist Ventures is a Western North Carolina-focused venture fund investing in early-stage, technology-enabled businesses that may be overlooked by traditional venture capital. Rather than focusing primarily on identifying potential unicorns, the fund takes what it describes as a “Moneyball” approach, evaluating businesses for durability, profitability, cash generation, and long-term performance across sectors including manufacturing, consumer products, healthcare, outdoor recreation, food and beverage, and enterprise software.
In August 2026, Abundance Angels recommended a combined $50,000 investment in Optimist Ventures Fund I, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Asheville Chamber of Commerce structured to help tech-enabled businesses recover and grow following Hurricane Helene. The fund pairs $500,000 in private investment capital with $500,000 in grant funding to provide 20 early-stage companies in the Optimist Ventures Accelerator with combined grant-and-investment packages, supporting quality job creation, local wealth building, and regional economic resilience in Western North Carolina.
Because this is a fund investment, capital is deployed across a portfolio of companies rather than into a single business.
